R.I.P Mitsuharu Misawa 1962 - 2009

Yesterday morning I went to the US NOAH site to check out the results of the June 13th, 09 Southern Navigation show where Global Tag League winners Mitsuharu Misawa & Go Shiozaki were challenging Akitoshi Saito & Bison Smith for the GHC tag titles. I went there instead of the Green Destiny site cause that site on the puroresufan network rarely gets updated anymore. I clicked on the results and it read that the champions successfully retained their titles, with Saito going over Misawa via TKO. I thought to myself, OK, Saito is getting another undeserved rub since the last person to KO Misawa was Saito's tag partner Bison Smith during the tag league a few months back.

So I went over to the Strong Style Forums to see what everyone thought of the results, and on the main forum page I see the topic titled "MITSUHARU MISAWA PASSE...", I couldn't see the whole title cause it didn't fit in the page. I thought maybe it read "Passed Out", as in maybe he blacked out during the match and they had to halt it, leading to the TKO. I click to enter the NOAH forum and BOOM! I see the new banner at the top of the page that says "Mitsuharu Misawa - June 18, 1962 - June 13, 2009", and the full title of the thread read MITSUHARU MISAWA PASSES AWAY!!!".

Needless to say the first thing that jumped in my head was "YOU GOTTA BE F*CKING KIDDING ME!?!?!"

But unfortunately it's true. One of the truly all time great in ring performers has passed away. During the GHC tag title match, Saito gave Misawa a back suplex, which resulted in Misawa unable to respond and he appearantly had a heart attack. Latest reports say it was cervical spinal cord damage. Medics attempted to revive him in the ring, and managed to get a pulse before rushing him to the hospital. Unfortunately, all efforts to save him failed, and he was declared dead at 10:10pm. He was 46, just five days short of his 47th birthday.

It's no exageration to state that Misawa was one of THE greatest pro-wrestlers to ever lace up a pair of boots. Throughout the 90's, he was part of some of the best pro-wrestling matches on the planet, either in singles or tag team, which still win over new fans as well as inspire a new generation of wrestlers. Heck, it was the clips of his matches with Akiyama, Vader, Kawada and Hansen that you could unlock in the Sega Dreamcast Giant Gram 2000 game that made me want to seriously check out Japanese wrestling, and watching Misawa vs Kawada for the first time in the first ever full puro match on the first ever puro tape I ever bought made me a fan for life.

Misawa had been getting a lot of slack lately from many critics, myself included, on the state of Pro Wrestling NOAH as well as his matches in general. No doubt the years of wear and tear had taken a toll on his body, but he still gave all he could in his big matches and it's unfortunate that for most of us who had been following his career that it would take an incident like this to remember and appreciate how good he used to be. I've been watching a lot of his old AJPW and NOAH matches these past few days and I still find it amazing some of the things he put his body through to entertain us.

I will just end this by saying, Misawa-san, Thank you for everything. For making me a fan of Japanese pro-wrestling. For all the great matches you put your body through to entertain us. Thank you. I'm sure your re-united with Jumbo and Baba up there in heaven, and smiling down on the green ring and legacy you've left behind, and giving strength to Kobashi, Shiozaki, and the rest of the NOAH roster to move on. Arigato, and sayonara, Misawa-san.

WWE New Year's Revolution 1/07/2007

Intercontinental Title - Steele Cage Match: Jeff Hardy [C] VS Johnny Nitro
A by the numbers match as expected. Starting off with some mat work, leading to the spot-by-spot off the cage sequence before the climatic finish. There wasn't really much they could do in the cage that hasn't already been done, but they pulled out a great innovative finish where Jeff kicked the door out from under Nitro and the guy got crotched on the cage door, leading to Jeff getting out of the cage for the win. Hey TNA, how's that for a innovative finish without screwing the fans over?
Match Rating: **1/2

Tag Team Turmoil: The Highlanders VS The World's Greatest Tag Team VS "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan & Super Crazy VS Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch VS Cryme Tyme

I wanted Cade & Murdoch to win this one more than the other teams. The two big Texans really work well together and are playing up more of a power game lately. I sort of expected Haas & Benjamin to make it to the end only for Cryme Tyme to steal the win from them, but it was good to see Cryme Tyme more or less earn one this time as they actually got lucky at the end.
Match Rating: **

Kenny Dykstra VS Ric Flair

TV quality match like I predicted. Would have been better if Flair got disqualified for ruffing up Kenny too much instead of the cheap predictable finish.
Match Rating: 1/2*

WWE Women's Championship: Mickie James [C] VS Victoria

Solid but short match. I'm all for a war between the face & heel divas, the problem is Mickie and Victoria can only do so much to carry the work load. I also never like it when someone controls the match and has a heavy advantage, but it only takes ONE move from the other person to knock them down for the 3 count.
Match Rating: **

World Tag Team Titles: D-Generation X VS Rated RKO [C]

DX were doing what they always do, squash anyone in their path. I knew DX would be out for blood in this one, but it still seems that the two best up and coming heels still can't get an advantage on them without cheating in some way. The match was actually ok, but than Triple H pulls his quad muscle doing a spinebuster, a move he's done hundreds of times in the past. From my view it could have been a lot worse since it looked like he had twisted his ankle ala Chris Candido when he did the move, but luckilly it wasn't as bad as that. Things were pretty chaotic from there as everyone worked on the fly to finish the match, but it was really bizarre to see Orton dash into the ring with a chair to try to stop HHH from hitting the Pedigree only for him to come to a complete halt and make a U-turn out of the ring for no reason. Give credit to HHH though for toughing it out and finishing the match as well as the closing spot despite the obvious fact that he was in pain and had difficulty standing.
Match Rating: ***

Carlito VS Chris Masters

The best part about this match was the springboard moonsault Carlito did and the half-nelson suplex (That's what it's called JR ) Masters did. Other than that, TV quality match. Everyone complains about Masters getting the win, but I say he out-cheated Carlito who's been doing it himself for months already.
Match Rating: *

WWE Championship: John Cena [C] VS Umaga

Again, like some critics, I don't agree that this was a bad match. They booked Umaga like a monster against everyone else, and they continued that here. It kept the fans on the edge of their seats cheering and hoping for Cena to make the hot comeback and they erupted when he scored the win, even if it was by a flash cradle. If the predicted re-match for the Royal Rumble is going to be what they say it is, than I think they made the right call here booking Cena as barely able to scrape by the Samoan Bulldozer.
Match Rating: ***

Overall:
A solid PPV. Nothing really outstanding, but WWE has to really wonder now about all these pointless additional PPVs as if this show never took place and they just built up to the Royal Rumble, HHH probably wouldn't have been injured and now looks like one of their key players is going to miss WrestleMania.

QUICK RESULTS
Intercontinental Title - Steele Cage Match: Jeff Hardy [C] beat Johnny Nitro to retain the title when he escaped the cage.
Tag Team Turmoil: Cryme Tyme beat The World's Greatest Tag Team, The Highlanders, "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan & Super Crazy, and Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch.

Arashi fired from AJPW!

I really should have reported this earlier, but Arashi was fired from AJPW earlier this week after he was arrested for being in possesion of 2.9 grams of marijuana. This incident only coming a week after Rob Van Dam and Sabu were also arrested in the United States for smoking marijuana while travelling to the next ECW show.
AJPW president Keiji Mutoh and Masanobu Fuchi immediately called an emergency press confress to announce Arashi's release, and to note the Arashi had been working without a contract for quite some time already.

BOO-YAH! RO&D leader Taiyo Kea won the All Japan Champion Carnival tournament last night, beating Voodoo Murders member super rookie Kohei Suwama in the finals! Kea had a tough road to the finals, with many doubting he'd even make it since Minoru Suzuki was also involved in the Carnival and many thought he'd win it to face Kojima next for the Triple Crown.
Could the slump Kea has been in lately finally come to and end? And as the last remaining disciple of Giant Baba's All Japan, will it finally be Kea's time to be champ?

AJPW "Hold Out Tour" 3/10/06 Results

Two big surprises at last night's big Ota Ward Gymnasium show.
Firstly, the underdog team of NOSAWA & MAZADA pulled off the upset of beating Shuji Kondo & "brother" YASSHI in the finals of the Jr. Tag League!
The second surprise came after the main event when Minoru Suzuki intruded and attacked Triple Crown champion Satoshi Kojima after the champion survived a bloody battle with the Great Muta to complete his 7th defense of the title!
The arrival of Minoru Suzuki should freshen things up a bit in All Japan. The question now is will he align himself with anyone or will Suzuki go at it alone in AJPW?

Kensuke Office results

Interesting notes coming out of the first Kensuke Office show.
Kikutaro got disqualified in the opener after getting frustrated by the antics of KENSUKI and the Florida Brothers.
The big battle royal ended with the possibility of Minoru Suzuki finally seting foot in All Japan in the near future, after being goaded by Tomoaki Honma and the AJPW workers who came to Akira Hokuto's defense during the battle royal.
The main event was billed as the first encounter of Sasaki VS Nakajima in about 2 years since they started teaming together. Of course, Kobashi & Tenryu heated things up themselves, with Tenryu bloodying Kobashi with a steel chair attack.
Definately looks like a fun show worth picking up on DVD when it comes out.

WRESTLE-1 "GP2005 2nd Round" Results

After putting on one MOTY caliber match on the first show, the second WRESTLE-1 show fell a bit short both performance and attendance wise. NOAH's Jun Akiyama was knocked out of the tournament losing in the main event to Bob Sapp, who most probably is going to win it all and beat Great Muta in the finals. Muta advanced beating long time rival Kensuke Sasaki. Personally, I'm hoping it's Sapp VS Jamal in the finals as the two never really settled their feud in AJPW.
The other "highly anticipated" match on the card was the first time in ring meeting of NOAH ace Mitsuharu Misawa and Akebono in a tag match. Surprising result here as Misawa PINNED Akebono with his running elbow smash to win the match.

WRESTLE-1 8/04/05 Results

The first WRESTLE-1 (not related to Keiji Mutoh's project) show was held yesterday and drew a good attendance, but most of the matches came off as weak and uninspiring. The only two standout matches on the show were Kaz Hayashi VS AJ Styles and Jun Akiyama VS Katsuyori Shibata. A big mentionable upset saw AJPW rookie sensation Kohei Suwama defeating The Predator to advance in the tournament. The only problem I have with this is that there were SIX tournament matches, with the tournament continuing around October. So we don't know if someone is getting a by to the next round, or if there are more round one matches coming since Suwama commented he's happy to make it to the QUARTER-FINALS of the tournament, meaning there are still 12 matches to go to fill a full 8-man quarter final bracket.

AJPW 7/26 Results - V1 for Kojima!

Satoshi Kojima made his first defence of the Triple Crown yesterday after winning almost FIVE MONTHS ago! But did All Japan pull the rug out from under him like New Japan did to Tenzan so many times? Hell No! They gave him his V1 win over arguably one of the biggest names in the company in Keiji Mutoh himself! Note to New Japan: THAT'S how you make a champion! Not by having defences against second rate performers like MiSuzuki and Scott Norton (eventhough I love watching the big guy), but by putting them over the big names of the company! This one defence alone probablt puts Kojima above Tenzan, and if Kojima goes over Kensuke Sasaki in a title match next, then he most definately is the better man out of TenKoji now.

I hope Masahiro Chono took notice of Kojima's victory, since he was in action teaming with RO@D against the Voodoo Murders in factioned warfare. It was said that Chono looked good here, but luckilly he didn't pick up the win as Kea finished the match pinning Palumbo with the TKO. The win helps draw attention back to Kea and helps reminds the fans that Kea is a Triple Crown contender down the road.

It was a bad night for the Voodoo Murders as the team of "brother" YASSHI & Shuji Kondo lost the All Asian tag titles to Kensuke Sasaki & Katsuhiko Nakajima. I'm guessing this move was to keep Sasaki in AJPW so he doesn't wander off to NOAH to often now. Or I predict they will have a short reign with the titles before losing them to a bigger team from the VM. If anything, Kondo is now free to go after the AJPW Jr. Title.
