WWE Wrestlemania XXVII Thoughts

1. I must have missed the part where they said the winner of the Royal Rumble gets to OPEN WrestleMania and not MAIN EVENT it. There is NO EXCUSE for having a World Title match opening the BIGGEST PPV OF THE YEAR. They say they are making history, I say they are burying their championships.

2. This is the 2nd Alberto Del Rio PPV match I’ve seen him in where he just seems to move is slow motion with as little impact as possible. The match was OK with a passable finish, and I’m one of the few who believed Edge would retain, especially when the commentary team mentioned how he had walked into WrestleMania 4 times as champion and never walked out with the gold.

3. Rhodes/Mysterio was good as well, not the show stealer everyone expected it to be. Rhodes being a bitter evil heel at the expense of the Dashing gimmick works for me. Love his new Titantron vid too with the newspaper headlines.

4. The 8-man tag should have been left off the card in favor of the US TITLE MATCH. Championship bouts should always have priority of glorified toilet breaks like this match was. In the first place it should have been Big Show vs. Big Zeke freeing up the IC and Tag Titles to be defended on the show (or pre-show).

5. Orton/Punk should easily be the match of the night, but I always hate it when they have the face play injured just to add drama to the match. Orton’s legs buckle under him when he goes for the punt, but he has no trouble doing an Olympic Slam or some of the other big moves he was doing late in the match? I didn’t expect Punk to escape that RKO near the end, but I totally saw the finishing mid-air RKO coming.

6. A Dusty Finish for a match between 2 announcers? Maybe they should have just left JBL as the special referee so that the anonymous GM could disqualify Lawler when Austin comes down to make the save. And yeah, seeing Michael Cole with tattoos is DISTURBING.

7. ‘Taker/HHH was just finisher overkill. Sure the match was no-holds barred, but could it hurt them to actually wrestle a bit just to help pace themselves? I will give them credit for this though, when HHH hit that Tombstone on ‘Taker, I actually believed that was the end of it. And like everyone else, I do wonder if the ending was a work or a shoot. If it was part of the storyline, then they wasted a lot of air time for it.

8. Everyone was raving about how Snooki was not the worst wrestler on the show. No surprise really since she only hit TWO MOVES in that very short match. Give credit to Michelle McCool too for dropping the fall after she’s been burying everyone in the Diva’s Division for the past few years.

9. Nothing says this is your biggest show of the year like a DOUBLE COUNT-OUT in the MAIN EVENT of the show. Miz kicking out of the Attitude Adjustment finally gave him some credibility, but then he needs The Rock to save his title before totally getting owned by Rocky.

10. Overall, I agree with many that this was a 4-hour edition of RAW and not the BIGGEST PPV OF THE YEAR. 9 matches on a 4-hour PPV where less than 50% of the air-time is actual wrestling is just piss-poor booking/planning. Then again, Vince is all about the “Entertainment” part of the business and not the “Sport” part of it.

Bye Bye WWE

I'm a life long WWE fan, but push has come to shove and I've finally dropped WWE from my viewing schedule. It's not just that RAW has dropped to new levels of horrible, but my cable operator has decided to increase the rates for the sports package channels I watch my WWE RAW and ECW on. Paying to watch crap is one thing, but increasing the rates and expecting me to pay more to watch crap is another.

Yes Vince, your show has gotten so bad that I don't feel bad now if I miss anything. I'll just watch it for FREE on the internet if anything interesting happens. I still have my year round subscription to WWE PPVs, but even that is threading on thin ice.

I think I still have TNA on one of the other channels, but I really can't be bothered to deal with that crap either.

They seriously need to bring The Ultimate Fighter back. Or does our idiotic Malaysian government think it will influence the mindless citizens to learn bone breaking fighting techniques and murderous chokeholds which will result in a higher crime rate and such?

Spoiling the Illusion: Return Edition

Not content with having cut the balls off of Chris Jericho a few weeks back, now they had to put Shane McMahon over Legacy this week, as he single handedly fought off all 3 members of the group and Randy Orton was forced to sell some really bad looking punches that mostly just hit air. Most of the RAW roster were on the rampway when all this went down. Wouldn't it have made more sense for them to run down and help Shane, their boss, and run off the group that was threatening to put all of them out of a job? So many things they could have done with this angle and they just had to screw up on the first chance they get.

Heck, I'll even say it's pretty obvious where things will go from here. Shane faces Orton at No Way Out, Orton wins. Orton goes on to his Wrestlemania title shot where he wins the title after Shane HELPS HIM as revenge to spite Stephanie for running him off RAW a few months back, and like Vince did from Vince Sr., now he wants to take over the company and is an honorary member of Legacy since he's a third generation star himself! You heard it here first! I'm calling it!

WWE Royal Rumble 2009

Wow. Off the bat they put Vince McMahon over the entire PPV by saying even if he's out of commission due to Orton's attack on RAW, the show must go on.

ECW Championship: Jack Swagger [C] beat Matt Hardy with the gutwrench powerbomb to retain.
- Great match with Hardy mostly in control save for a short bit where Swagger worked over his left shoulder which played a big part in the finish. Hardy hit a moonsault for a 2 count and tried for the Side Effect, but Swagger broke free and rammed Hardy's bad shoulder into the corner post and followed with the powerbomb for the victory.

WWE Women's Championship: Melina pinned Beth Phoenix [C] with a modified roll-up to win the title.
- In a spot that has probably never been done before, Beth hammered Melina in the back of her head with Melina's own leg! Melina went all out here against Beth, and things did get sloppy a bit near the end, but Melina managed to pull the victory when she flipped out of a wheel-barrow into a roll-up to surprisingly win the title! Good match!

Backstage promo with JBL promising HBK he'll pay HBK everything he owes him tonight AND get him a spot in the Royal Rumble match as long as JBL wins the title tonight.

World Heavyweight Championship: John Cena beat John "Bradshaw" Leyfield with the FU to retain.
- JBL used Misawa's facelock
- There were actually people booing Cena over JBL. Didn't think anyone could actually cheer for JBL. Unless maybe they want to see that JBL/HBK title match at WrestleMania?
- Cena kicked out of the Clothesline From Hell and JBL escaped the FU before accidentally giving the referee a big boot to the face. With the referee down, HBK gets in the ring and gives JBL Sweet Chin Music! He than gives Cena Sweet Chin Music and puts JBL over Cena! HBK walks off and a second referee finally comes down to make the count, but Cena pulls a shoulder up at 2! Both men struggle to their feet and JBL tries for a short clothesline, but Cena picks him up and hits the FU for the pin!
- The match itself wasn't all that good, but it was more about the angle at the end. HBK thought he got the job done, but JBL didn't win the title, so it means he's not going to pay him?

WWE Championship: Edge beat Jeff Hardy [C] after Matt Hardy hit Jeff with a chair.

- Why is the champion out first? The fans are awfully quiet for his intro to. Hardy is wearing all black and his face is painted up like he's in a Norwegian black metal band.
- Vickie Guerrero comes out and declares the match now No-DQ before introducing Edge.
- Edge tries to bring 2 chairs into the ring but gets speared off the apron by Jeff! Jeff dives out after Edge than gives him a Twist of Fate on the apron. Jeff sets up Edge on the RAW announce table and brings out a ladder, but Chavo makes the save for Edge. Hardy attacks Chavo and sets him up on the table before diving off the top of the ladder to put him through it!
- Finish sees Hardy counter the spear into the Twist of Fate! Hardy goes up top for the Swanton, but Vickie comes out to try and stop it. Jeff kicks her off and hits the Swanton, but Vickie pulls the referee to stop the count. Matt Hardy comes out and the Hardy Brothers go to Conchairto Edge, but Hardy hits Jeff in the head with the chair instead! Edge makes the cover and wins the title!
- SWERVE! Everyone expected Christian to make his return to cost Jeff the title, but it was his own brother Matt that did the deed!

Jeff Hardy finally wins the big one

WWE ARMAGEDDON 12/14/2008

Vladimir Kozlov beat Matt Hardy with a chokeslam
A lot better than Kozlov's match with HHH at Survivor Series. Also helped that the live crowd didn't crap all over Koslov's mat work as he made it more interesting than HHH match too, with a modified arm keylock rather than the headlocks. Koslov's new modified chokeslam/spinebuster finisher is also a big step up from the reverse DDT he used to use. With some work, Koslov could be a main event monster yet.

IC Title No.1 Contender's Tournament Finals: CM Punk beat Rey Mysterio with the Go2Sleep.

Whatever expectations the wrestling fans had for this match I'm sure were met as they had one of the better WWE matches I've seen in a while. This is the kind of back and forth competitive match that's been missing for a while now, and it was good to see Rey more evenly matched rather than being the underdog for a change. He even matched Punk with submission-holds! Great match!

We get a very long and drawn out in ring segment with JBL introducing his newest "employee", Shawn Michaels, and HBK explaining the only reason he's doing it is for the money. Waste of PPV time.

Belfast Brawl: Finlay beat Mark Henry after hitting him with the shaleleigh.
Fun plunder match with a few interesting spots, like Mark Henry crushing a thrash can between him and Finlay, while pressing Finlay into the corner as well. Too bad once again Finlay shows he can't win a match without a weapon anymore.

Batista beat Randy Orton with the Batista-bomb.

I really wanted to like this match, but it just didn't do it for me. Mostly due to Randy Orton's overuse of the headlock to wear down Big Dave. I don't care if he tried to switch it up with a cravat, it was still boring. The ending spot where Batista countered Orton's attempt at Bob Holly's Alabama Slam into a spinning Batista-bomb was a nice spot though. I still think it could have been better.

Santa's Little Helper Diva Match: Maria, Mickie James, Kelly Kelly & Michelle McCool beat Marysse, Victoria, Jillian & Natalya when McCool used a Styles Clash on Jillian.
Standard Divas match, but the surprise of the match was watching McCool pull a rather sluggish Styles Clash for the finish. Her slow heel turn continues.

The Great Khali comes out for the Slammy Award winning Khali Kiss Cam. He wants to kiss McCool, but she runs off. That leads to Runjin Singh bringing out Mae Young to take the kiss. And for the first time we see fear in Khali.

World Heavyweight Championship: John Cena [C] beat Chris Jericho with the STFU to retain.
Good match, but it would have been better if Cena had won the belt here rather than in his return match at Survivor Series. A lot of counters and both men kicked out of each other's standing finishers, but Cena was able to escape the Walls of Jericho and counter into the STFU to retain his title.

WWE Championship - Triple Threat Match: Jeff Hardy beat Edge [C] and Triple H when he pinned Edge with the Swanton to win the title.

Well, Jeff finally wins the big one! Great match with some great spots like Jeff getting speared off the RAW announce table onto the Smackdown announce table. Koslov's run in to cost Triple H the victory, but Jeff still coming out of nowhere to take the title when it looked like H was on the verge of victory. The question now is how they follow up Jeff's reign.

WWE Backlash 4/29/2007

World Tag Team Titles: The Hardys [C] beat Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch when Matt pinned Murdoch after Jeff hit the Swanton to retain.
Look past the fact that Cade and Murdoch have been jobbing out for the past few months, and you’ll find this was a great tag match and a solid showing for the cowboys, something they really needed to rebuild their credibility in the tag ranks. This was the best Cade and Murdoch have looked in a long while, and it helped that they gave the match good time to work out. They may have lost the match, but lets hope that Cade and Murdoch continue to get pushed as a full time tag team.
Match Rating: ***

WWE Women’s Championship: Melina [C] beat Mickie James with a reverse DDT to retain.

Probably the best Women’s title match in a LONG time, and this should have been the title match at Wrestle Mania 23. They had probably one of the more original spots in a while when both women were sitting split-legged and were duking it out from that position. This was also easily the best Melina has looked in the ring and hopefully they keep the feud with Mickie going so we can get more quality bouts instead of no-talent Diva squash matches.
Match Rating: ***

WWE United States Championship: Chris Benoit [C] pinned MVP with an inside cradle to retain.

Another great technical mat wrestling match from these two. MVP again showed that he could hang with Benoit hold for hold, but still came up short. The finish was a little sudden, but like JBL says, it just shows how dangerous Benoit can be and how he can attack you from any position for the win.
Match Rating: ***

ECW World Championship – 3-On-1 Handicap Match: Vince McMahon, Shane McMahon & Umaga beat Bobby Lashley [C] when Vince pinned Lashley after a diving body press from Umaga to become the new ECW champion.

I guess this was the “sports entertainment” of the evening. Wasn’t really a whole lot to this other than Lashley tossing around Shane and Umaga for the first half and making the big come back from getting beat down, only to be beaten by the numbers game. Though I’m surprised they couldn’t come up with a better ending than they did since Lashley has been built up as a monster these past few months.
Match Rating: *

World Heavyweight Championship: The Undertaker [C] VS Batista went to a Draw when both men couldn’t answer the 10 count after Batista speared Undertaker off the entrance stage.

This one was definitely more exciting than their Wrestle Mania match due to the Las Man Standing stipulation. Both men again worked on all cylinders and created some great dramatic near fall moments. The fans didn’t like the double count out, but was happy when Undertaker was announced as still being the champion. Interesting that both men recovered rather quickly after the match though.
Match Rating: ****

WWE Championship – Fatal Four-Way Match: John Cena [C] beat Shawn Michaels, Edge & Randy Orton when he pinned Orton after getting hit by Sweet Chin Music.

Probably one of the best Fatal Four-Ways ever, with non-stop action everywhere and a ton of near falls all over the place. And the ending was rather interesting fluke the way they had Edge spear Orton, Cena FUs Edge, and HBK superkicks Cena who falls on Orton to get the cover! Looks like the HBK-Cena feud is going to continue for a while due to what happened here, especially since HBK did beat Cena clean one-on-one on RAW this week.

Overall:
A strong PPV with a lot of solid action.

Money In The Bank Ladder Match: Jeff Hardy VS King Booker with Queen Sharmell VS Finlay VS CM Punk VS Ken Kennedy VS Matt Hardy VS Randy Orton VS Edge

Back in the ring Booker goes wild and gives spine busters to everyone before giving us a WresleMania Spinaroonie before he gets sandwiched by both Hardy’s using ladders! They take out Edge and set up the teeter-totter ladder to smash Edge’s face, but Finlay knocks Jeff off the top and Edge suplexes Matt onto the ladder! Orton goes up the ladder, but Punk cuts him off hitting him with a second ladder before setting it up and going up top. Orton cuts off Punk and gives him an RKO off the ladder! Booker goes up top and Orton tries to RKO him off the ladder, but Booker counters it and gives Orton a Book-End off the ladder! Booker back up the ladder and Matt goes after him, but Sharmell pulls Matt off the ladder and King goes for the contract, but Matt threatens to Twist of Fate Sharmell, so Booker has no choice but to go after Matt, who gives him the Twist of Fate! Matt goes up the ladder, but Finlay knocks the ladder over before picking up Matt and giving him the Celtic Cross on the ladder! Finlay is bleeding, but he sets up the ladder and Hornswaggle the Little Bastard comes out and tries to go up the ladder to get the briefcase before Kennedy comes in and takes out Finlay. Hornswaggle punches Finlay several times, but Kennedy gets pissed and gives Hornswaggle a rolling Samoan drop off the ladder! Finlay smacks the ladder into Kennedy’s face and Punk takes out Finlay before going up the ladder himself. Kennedy cuts off Punk and almist reaches the briefcase, but Punks knocks him off the ladder! Kennedy quickly picks up another ladder and smacks it into Punk’s gut, knocking him off the ladder and Kennedy goes up and retrieves the briefcase to win Money in the Bank!!!
That was just awesome and given good time to work out. Looks like they’ll give Edge an excuse here since he was taken out of the match due to Jeff’s big leg drop.
Match Rating: ****1/2

A video of the premier of Stone Cold Steve Austin’s movie, The Condemned is shown with all the fans and wrestlers attending giving it a thumbs up.

An “All Grown Up” promo video for Batista is shown, and it’s time for the next match.

Inter-Promotional Match: The Great Khali [RAW] VS Kane [Smackdown!]
They lock up and Khali shoves Kane down. Kane tries a shoulder block, but Khalli knocks him down. Khali misses a chop, and Kane hits several shots before Kahli tosses him out fo the ring. Kane drops Khali’s throat across the ropes and hits a big clothesline on Khali which doesn’t budge him before Khali hits a clothesline of his own taking down Kane. Khali easily picks up and bodyslams Kane before locking on nerve-hold, but Kane manages to get out of it. Khali pounds and chokes Kane in the corner. Khali misses a bis shot and Kane starts pounding away on Khali, but Khali shoves him off. Kane goes up top and hits the Big Red Clothesline which staggers Khali. Kane hits Khali hard and Khali does the classic “giant stuck on the ropes” spot. Kane exits the ring and gests his hook ‘n’ chain out from under, but Khali catches him coming back in and gives hu the big chop! Khali rips off the turnbuckle, but Kane pulls the chain between Khali’s legs as the referee checks the turnbuckle! KANE BODYSLAMS KHALI! He only gets a near fall, so Kane tries for the chokeslam, but Khali fights back and manages to hit his doule-arm chokeslam and pins Kane with one foot on his chest to get the win! Khali chokes out Kane with his own chain for a bit before finally leaving.
Definitely lived up to MY expectations anyway, and Khali did more in this match than I can recall in any of his other matches.

WWE US Championship: Montell Vontamious Porter VS Chris Benoit [C]

Starts off with some good mat wrestling. MVP takes down Benoit, and Benoit comes back but MVP is able to escape a German suplex and Crippler Crossface attempt before sending Benoit out of the ring. Benoit back in and tries for the Sharpshooter, and transitions into the Crossface again, but MVP is too close to the ropes. Benoit goes up top and hits the Swandive Headbutt to get the 3-count and retain his US title!
Wow. Definitely the technical match of the night and MVP looked his best ever here. Good to see Benoit retain, though the ending felt a bit anti-climatic since he didn’t use the Crossface.

World Heavyweight Championship: Batista [C] VS the Undertaker
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!? THEY ARE PUTTING THIS ONE UP NOW THIS EARLY ON THE CARD?!? Smackdown! GM Theodore Long does the ring introductions, and the Dead Man gets his classic intro with the druids, but that’s still no excuse for having the match this early on the card! It just screams that how Smackdown! Is the “B” Brand when the Undertaker wins the Royal Rumble to get his title shot, but his title match is still middle of the card on WrestleMania!
The bell rings and Batista immediately takes down ‘Taker with a spear and they brawl it out in the corner. Batista gets booed as he takes down ‘Taker with a big clothesline. They fight to the outside of the ring and Batista whips ‘Taker knees first into the steel steps. Back in the ring, Batista goes up top and hits a big diving shoulder block. ‘Taker catches Batista with a big boot, but Big Dave no sells it and takes down the Dead Man with a big clothesline. The world champion continues the assault and bodyslams the ‘Taker. ‘Taker comes back and the two slug it out, Undertaker winning out backing Batista into the corner and hits a pair of splashes into the corner before hitting Snake Eyes, a big running boot and a leg drop for a near fall.
Undertaker hits Old School and sets up Batista for the chokeslam, but Batista muscles out of it. Batista misses a clothesline and ‘Taker hits the big flying clothesline. They slug it out again and Batista gets knocked out of the ring. ‘Taker smashes Batista’s face into the steps and lays several big elbow shots to Batista as he lays on the apron before giving him a big leg drop. Batsita struggles to get to his feet outside the ring, and the Undertaker hits his trademark HUGE running dive over the top rope on Big Dave! They brawl outside the ring some more, and Batista sends ‘Taker into the time-keeper/ring announcer’s corner. They brawl into the announcers area and Batista sets up ‘Taker on the RAW announce table. He picks up the Dead Man and slams him off the RAW announce table onto the ECW announce table!
Back into the ring and Batista gets a near fall. Batista sets up ‘Taker for the Batista-bomb, but ‘Taker backs him into the corner. Batista counters an Irish whip with a belly-to-belly suplex for a near fall. Batista mounts and pounds away on ‘Taker in the corner, but ‘Taker carries him out and drops him with the Last Ride! Cover but only a near fall! The champion rebounds and catches ‘Taker with a spine buster, but ‘Taker sits up! Batista misses a clothesline and gets chokeslammed for a near fall! ‘Taker signals for the Tombstone, but Batista slips over and hits a big spear. Batista hits the Batista-bomb, but ‘Taker kicks out at 2.9! Batista sets up for another, but ‘Taker flips him over. Batista tries for a Tombstone, but ‘Taker flips out and shoves Big Dave into the corner, and catches him on the rebound with a Tombstone of his own and pins him for the 3-count to win the world heavyweight title! 15-0!
A great match as both men worked on all cylinders. Interesting to see ‘Taker get dominated like he did here, but the reasonable doubt added to the drama of the match. The fans were clearly behind the Dead Man all the way, just too bad this match had to be so early on the card. I loved the visual of ‘Taker walking off into the smoke and darkness when he left the ring before the Hellfire and brimstone broke out.

A Bobby Lashley “All Grow Up” video is aired.
Vince backstage all full of himself. Stephanie walks in with her new born, though we don’t see it, but we do get a crib-cam point of view as Vince talks smack about Donald Trump to the baby. Yeah…

Sandman clotheslines Burke from the ring! RVD hits the Five Star Frog Splash on Striker and covers him for the win! ECW WINS AT WRESTLEMANIA!!!
Definitely a bit on the short side, but good to see the ECW originals standing tall at WrestleMania after all the Hell they’ve been through in the past weeks.

A Stone Cold Steve Austin “All Grown Up” video is played.
A look back at the build up of the Battle of the Billionaires, the feud between Umaga and Lashley, and Steve Austin being brought in as the special guest referee.

Battle of the Billionaires Hair VS Hair Match: WWE Intercontinental Champion Umaga with Armando Alejandro Estrada representing Vince McMahon VS ECW Champion Bobby Lashley representing Donald Trump
Special Guest Referee: “Stone Cold” Steve Austin
Rather hilarious to see the mobile barber shop get it’s own entrance! Umaga comes out with using some of the Wild Samoan’s old props. Money drops from the rafters as Donald Trump makes his entrance with the ex-Miss America. Interestingly, the new Miss America is sitting at ringside, along with Ms. Teen USA and Ms. Universe. Austin is actually wearing a referee shirt, and has a bit of a beer gut showing. We’re just under two and a half hours into this pay per view, and this is the semi-main event, so I think we’re going to be in for a long match was a lot of shenanigans.
Both men charge at each other and slug it out. Lashley backs Umaga into the corner and beat him down. Austin physically pulls Lashley off Umaga and warsn him to respect his authority. Umaga catches Lashley with a big foot to the face, but misses a corner charge. Lashley hits a bit shoulder tackle off the second rope for a near fall. Armando gets on the apron, so Lashley drags him in and gives him the big powerslam! Umaga charges at Lashley, who ducks and Umaga smashes back first out on the floor! They get back in the ring and continue to brawl. Umaga sidesteps a spear and now Lashley takes a big crash out to the floor. Back in the ring, Umaga splashes Lashlaey for a near fall. Umaga chokes Lashley on the ropes and Austin pulls him off! Umaga stares him down for a bit before going back after Ausitn, so Austin pulls him off again! Umaga again stares at Austin. Lashley tries to rebound, but is taken down by a big clothesline.
Umaga drives his 300+lbs frame onto Lashley several times. Lashley battles back, but gets caught off the ropes with a Samoan drop! Should be noted that the fans boo Lashley every time he gests offense going, so I guess the people really do want to see Donald bald. Lashley tries to bodyslam Umaga, but his legs give out. Umaga tries to slam Lashley, but he flips over and rebounds off the ropes, knocking McMahon off the apron. Umaga with a Complete Shot on Lashley and he goes up top, but Lashley recovers and tosses him off the top before turning the big man inside out with a big clothesline! Austin lays the count on both men and reaches 9, but stops the count and orders them both to get up! He tells the time-keeper they’ll be no count outs here! Shane comes out to check on Vince as Umaga goes to work on Lashley again.
Austin pulls Umaga off Lashley again, and Shane distracts Austin, givingUmaga the chance to hit him with the Samoan Spike! Shane goes to work on Lashley! Lashley catches Shane and tries for a belly-to-belly, but Umaga makes the save! Umaga hits the running crner attack on Umaga, and Vince gets a thrash can out from under the ring. They set it up and Shane hits the Coast To Coast on Lashley with the thrash can in his face! Shane reveals he’s got a referee’s shirt on under his shirt! He sets up Lashley, and Umaga hits a big diving body press off the top! Shane makes the count, but Austin recovers and pulls him out of the ring before beating him up a bit! Austin back in the ring, but Umaga takes him out! Donald Trump has had enough and takes down Vince at ringside and lays several shots into him! Umaga sets up Austin for the Samoan Spike, but Austin ducks and gives Umaga the Stone Cold Stunner! Spear by Lashley! He covers the Samoan Bulldozer and gets the 3-count! Vince is in shock!
Vince brings Vince into the ring, but gets attacked by Shane! Austin reverses an Irish whip and hits the Thez Press followed by the big elbow drop and another Stunner! Vince tries to sneak away as everyone celebrates in the ring, but Lashley quickly dashes out after him and carries him back to the ring! Austin gives Vince a Stunner and they strap him to the barber chair. Vince begs for his life as Donald and Lashley grab a pair of electric razors and go to work on the chairman of WWE! It’s the real deal folks! Vince is getting shaved BALD as the “Bald Headed Blues” plays on the PA and Austin enjoys a beer watching it all! McMahon flips out of the barber chair at the sight of himself when Lashey shows him the mirror and is a broken man as he walks back down the isle as the babyfaces celebrate in the ring.
OUT OF NOWHERE, AUSTIN STUNS DONALD TRUMP!!! Lashley is in shock and checks on the billionaire as Austin lets out a big laugh with a million dollar smile on his face as he leaves!
Not the greatest match by any means, since it was all about the drama. Still quite entertaining though.

A John Cena “All Grown Up” video is shown followed by a Backlash promo.
The Smackdown! announce team bring us back to earlier in the evening for a quick look at the dark match of the show, an inter-promotional lumberjack tag match between Ric Flair & Carlito against Cruiserweight champion Chavo Guerrero & Gregory Helms. Carlito picked up the win with the Back Cracker on Carlito.

WWE Women’s Championship – Lumberjill Match: Ashley VS Melina [C]
Ariel is noticeably absent from the lumberjills.
Ashley tries several quick near falls as Melina gets distracted by the lumberjills. Melina chokes Ashley on the ropes and gives her a Giant Swing and gets a near fall. Melina with a surfboard stretch on Ashley. Ashley manages to take down Melina with a head scissors off the ropes. She lays several elbow strikes and flips Melina out of the corner with the monkey flip. She goes for her Star Struck elbow drop finisher but misses. Melina manages to counter a roll-up with one of her own to retain her title. “Lumberjill Pandemonium” breaks out after the match and Melina escapes with her title.
As expected, the weakest match of the night. Ashley was nowhere near ready for a big match like this and Melina did all she could to carry her. If you need a toilet break, this was it.

A Shawn Michaels “All Grown Up” video is played, and we get a look at the history between HBK and John Cena leading up to tonight.

WWE Championship: “The Heartbreak Kid” Shawn Michaels VS John Cena [C]
HBK uses the DX entrance. We than see a Ford Mustang racing and drifting to the arena and smashes it’s way into the arena. John Cena steps out and makes his way to the ring! The crowd still heavily boos him though. We’ve got almost a full hour left in this 4-hour PPV, so I guess you can expect this one to last a while compared to everything else!
They mouth off a bit, and HBK slaps Cena! Cena misses several big punches and gets dropped by a big punch from HBK! HBK taunts him as Cena knows this isn’t going to be easy. They trade armlocks and HBK again uses his quickness to duck Cena’s strikes and lays several of his own in and drops him with a big chop. Arm wringer by HBK, and he takes down Cena with a headlock. HBK locks Cena’s arm to add pressure. They fight to their feet and HBK rebounds off the ropes and ducks two big clotheslines, but the third one finds it’s mark and almost takes his head off! Cena hits a shouldblock and tries for another, but Shawn counters with a Thez Press. HBK sent over the top, but lands on the apron. Cena goes after him, but HBK fights him off and hiptosses him out of the ring to the floor! HBK hits an enzuguiri on Cena, than hits a springboard moonsault off the ring ropes to Cena, almost breaking Cena’s back on the announce table!
Back in the ring, HBK measures Cena with chops and strikes. HBK starts working on Cena’s knee. HBK rams Cena’s knee into the ring post and continues to stomp and kick away on it. Cena has trouble standing and HBK continues to taunt him and attack his knee. Cena tries to fight back with punches out of the corner, but HBK breaks his momentum with a shoulder charge into the corner. HBK finally makes a mistake and misses a corner charge, hitting his head into the corner post and busting himself open!
Cena takes advantage and takes down HBK with a big clothesline followed by a series of right hands and a pair of diving shoulder blocks. Cena hits the spin-out backdrop and delivers the Five Knuckle Shuffle. Cena salutes HBK and sets him up for the FU, but HBK slips out and lays in a chop. Cena whips HBK into the corner. HBK ducks a clothesline from Cena, and tries for Sweet Chin Music but hits the refeee! Cena tries for the FU again, but HBK counters it into a DDT! A bloodied HBK sets up Cena outside the ring and piledrives him on the steel ring steps!
HBK struggles to get Cena’s limp body back into the ring and makes the cover as a second referee rushes to the ring. HBK only gets a 2 count though. Cena reverses an Irish whip and HBK hits the flying forearm off the ropes and does the kip up! HBK goes up top and diving elbow drop! HBK tunes up the band for Sweet Chin Music! He goes for it, but Cena explodes with a big clothesline! They fight to their feet and exchange strikes. Cena catches HBK off the ropes and tries for the FU, but HBK slips out into a sunset flip for a near fall! HBK tries for a Thez Press, but Cena counters it into the FU and hits it! Cena struggles over to make the pin, but HBK kicks out at 2! Cena sets up HBK on the top rope and tries for a super FU! HBK fights it off and knocks Cena off the top. HBK with a diving cross body, but Cena catches him and rolls through, picking him up for the FU! He tries for it, but HBK lands on his feet! HBK tries for Sweet Chin Music, but Cena ducks and leg trips him, trying for the STFU! HBK kicks it off several times and even cradles Cena for a near fall! Back to their feet and HBK tries an enzuguiri, but Cena ducks and turns it into the STFU! HBK fights and reaches the ropes to break the hold.
The referee pulls Cena off HBK and warns him to respect his authority. Cena turns around and eats Sweet Chin Music! HBK struggles over and makes the cover, but Cena kicks out at 2! The referee counts both men down! Both men struggle to their feet. Cena again tries for the FU, but HBK struggles out of it only to get locked in the STFU in the middle of the ring! HBK fights for all his worth, but eventually taps out! Cena retains at WrestleMania!!!
Honestly, I thought the match seemed to drag on in places with a lot of inactivity. I actually jumped out of my seat when HBK cradled Cena out of the STFU for a near fall, thinking he would have won it there, but alas, WWE continues to shove immortal Cena down our throats.
Match Rating: ****

The show closes with a great video recap of the PPV, mixed in with clips from 20 years ago of WrestleMania III, comparing Kane slamming Khali to Hogan slamming Andre, and Ricky Steamboat holding the IC title to Benoit holding the US title.

Overall: Despite the fact that it’s a total travesty for the Undertaker to win the Royal Rumble by eliminating HBK last, but HBK STILL gets THE MAIN EVENT SPOT of the PPV, and ‘Taker only gets the brand main event spot on the show. Despite the fan voting showing Cena was the fan favorite to win, he was still heavily booed here, and it should have been ‘Taker’s title win to send the fans home happy for this big show. The only disappointing match was the Women’s Title match, but everything else was all good from the get go.

Mike Awesome passes away

Former ECW world champion Mike Awesome (real name Mike Alfonso) was found dead in his home on Saturday. He was 41.
Awesome was an amazingly agile man for his size, and made a name for himself in FMW in Japan as The Gladiator, in a feud with Masato Tanaka that was carried over to the US when both men worked for ECW, putting on some of the most memorable extreme matches ever. The feud even continued in 2005 when Awesome faced Tanaka in the match of the night at the ECW One Night Stand reunion PPV.
Awesome will definitely be remembered by hardcore fans for his time in ECW and FMW, since his run in WCW and WWE did more to damage his credibility than add to his legend.

Rest in Peace, Gladiator. You will be missed.

WWE No Way Out 2007 results

MVP & MNM VS The Hardys & Chris Benoit
So much for the Hardys/MNM match at the Royal Rumble being the final confrontation of the two teams. Was rather surprised at the time they gave the match, which is a good thing. Though it was a little premature for Mercury to tap out the second Benoit put the Crossface on him, even if he does have a busted face.

WWE Cruiserweight Title Invitational: Scotty 2 Hotty VS Daivari VS Gregory Helms [C] VS Funaki VS Shannon Moore VS Jimmy "Wang" Yang VS Jamie Noble VS Chavo Guerrero
Scotty 2 Hotty beat Daivari with the Worm.
- Daivari goes from beating Tommy Dreamer in ECW to jobbing to the one of the WWE jobber kings in Scotty 2 Hotty and one of the most ridiculous finishers EVER. He should have stuck with Great Khali.
Gregory Helms beat Scotty 2 Hotty with a modified facebuster.
- I love Helms' knee to the face finisher.
Gregory Helms pinned Funaki hooking the tights.
- Former cruiserweight champion jobs in seconds, even if Helms did cheat.
Gregory Helms beat Shannon Moore with a modified facebuster.
- A short 3-Count reunion.
Jimmy "Wang" Yang pinned Gregory Helms with a hurricanrana.
- Some asshole in the crowd actually yeld "boring" during this?!?
Jimmy "Wang" Yang pinned Jamie Noble with a moonsault.
Chavo Guerrero beat Jimmy "Wang" Yang with the frog splash to win the title.
- Yang thought he had the title won, but Chavo was the surprise entry in the match and had a fun match with Yang before pulling out the win.

Finlay & Little Bastard VS The Boogeyman & Little Boogeyman
Finlay wearing Little Bastard's green bowler and kicking Little Boogeyman in the face was one of the greatest spots ever! Good to see Finlay pick up the win here even if it was by pinning Little Boogeyman with a shot from the shalayleigh.

King Booker with Queen Sharmell VS Kane
Pretty good back and forth match with Kane winning it with the chokeslam.

WWE Tag Team Titles: Paul London & Brian Kendrick VS Deuce 'N' Domino with Cherry
My first look at Deuce 'N' Domino with their 50's gimmick, which is kinda cool. They dominated the champions with their size and power, but the ending bit where Kendrick countered and pinned Deuce (or is that Domino?) with a roll up just barely ducking the other guy out of the Doomsday Device was timed PERFECTLY! I hope Deuce 'N' Domino aren't fazed out as they look like a fun thug team to keep around.
Match Rating: **

ECW World Title: Bobby Lashley VS Mr. Kennedy
The fans actually started turning on this match with all the leg work Kennedy was doing. Things got better by the end, but a lame DQ finish when lashley whacked Kennedy with a chair when Kennedy first tried to hit him with it. At least we got a Hiroshi Hase reference from JBL when Lashley gave Kennedy a T-bone suplex, though a T-bone is almost nothing like Hase's Urinage.
Match Rating: *1/2

Diva Invitational Talent Contest
Ashley beat everyone else by coming out, showing her Playboy magazine cover, and taking her top off revealing 2 Playboy bunny stickers covering her boobs. Ok......

Shawn Michaels & John Cena VS Batista & the Undertaker
Good to see Batista working harder than he usually does, most probably cause 'Taker is in there with him. The match was a good back and forth tag match, with the odds mostly against the RAW team due to the size and power advantage of the Smackdown team. The ending sort of made sense where Batista turned on 'Taker as payback for the chokeslam he received on RAW a few weeks back, leading to HBK hitting Sweet Chin Music and Cena hitting the FU on 'Taker to get the pin.
Match Rating: ***

Overall: I'm still a bit miffed that they nixed the 4-way tag title ladder match, but the show was still strong from top to bottom, except for the Diva bit.

WWE Royal Rumble 1/28/2007

MNM VS the Hardys
I had actually watched the ECW December to Dismember match between these two teams, and that was simply put the best normal tag match WWE had all year since they actually booked it as a competitive tag match. This match had almost as much time as the ECW PPV match, but not as high impact and minus the awesome double team offense from that one. This was still solid though, with great back and forth action and near falls which the fans were very much into. Pretty good ending too as Matt hit the Twist of Fate on Nitro and tried to give Mercury one as well, but Mercury tackled him out of the ring, but Jeff got the blind tag to hit the Swanton on Nitro for the win!

ECW World Title: Test VS Bobby Lashley [C]
WHAT THE F*CK! Is this the final WWE bastardization of ECW?!? THERE ARE NO COUNT OUTS IN ECW! ESPECIALLY FOR A PPV TITLE MATCH! I was originally going to just criticize this match for Lashley tossing Test around with his power moves, and all Test had to retaliate with were rest holds! The only thing of significance Test did was a killer running boot which Lashley kicked out of. Than Test gets knocked out of the ring and decides to WALK AWAY FROM A TITLE MATCH?!? BULLSH*T.
Match Rating: DUD

World Heavyweight Title: Mr. Kennedy VS Batista [C]
This one started off really slow, but got really good at the end as Batista did a great job of fighting through the pain in his leg and still trying for his power moves. Batista actually looked like he got lucky to get out of this still with the title as Kennedy was fighting all the way even when he jacked up for the Batista-bomb which put him away in the end.

WWE Championship – Last Man Standing Match: Umaga VS John Cena [C]
Now this was brutal! Umaga has been on a rampage in WWE, and Cena finally stopped the big man after a brutal bloody battle! The crowd was way into it as well, and the boos for Cena even turned to cheers by the end of it! Cena had to choke out Umaga with a rope assisted STFU to finally knock out the Samoan Bulldozer!

Royal Rumble Winner: The Undertaker!
It may not have been the best Rumble match ever, but it certainly was the best final 2 confrontation in Royal Rumble history!
Match Rating: ***1/2

Overall: The only match that truly bombed on this show was the ECW world title match. Than again, all the ECW originals were booked very poorly in the Rumble match also. Only the WWE created ECW guys like Punk and Holly lasted longer than 4 minutes, with RVD in there as the only ECW original.

Best & Worst of 2006

Since I haven't watched all the big Japanese shows of 2006, this will only be limited to North American pro-wrestling, WWE and TNA in particular since I don't watch a lot of the indie stuff and what I do have is also severely backlogged.

WWE Wrestler of the Year: John Cena
- Let's face it, if the crowds didn't boo him all the time, would he have to force himself on us all the time with those childish poo-poo joke promos? Why is this guy getting booed anyway? Do fans really think he has no talent, or is it because it's cool to do it like when they chant "You Suck!" at Kurt Angle when we all know he's a wrestling machine? Looks past Cena's gimmick and everything he does OUT of the ring, and concentrate on what he does IN the ring, and he's really a very competant worker in there. The only gripe I have with him is that for the love of God he really needs to learn how to apply an STF properly.

TNA Wrestler of the Year: Samoa Joe
- This was the year TNA put Joe over in a big way with high-profile matches away from the X-Division and into the main event scene, showing that he could hang and go toe-to-toe with men his size and not just X-Division cruiserweights he could out-muscle and toss around.

WWE Breakout Star of the Year: CM Punk
- He got himself over the old fashioned way: build up a fan following on the independant circuit and take them with you to the big time, and continue to work your ass off to live up to the hype. So of course once he gets the biggest pops in the ring when standing next to the likes of HHH & HBK, WWE decided to pull the rug out from under him. WWE better be careful, cause Punk is the one new face they've build all year that the fans really get behind and it would be a travesty to bury him when he could be making tons of money for them.

TNA Breakout Star of the Year: Hernandez
I don't watch a lot of TNA TV, but from what I've seen from Hernandez has really impressed me. I've said it before and I'll say it again, it's almost inhuman some of the things this big man can do in there. I'm not sure how he'd fare as a singles wrestler, but there are definately some possibilities for high profile feuds with the likes of Abyss and Samoa Joe in the heavyweight division. A world title shot on IMPACT! wouldn't even be a bad idea.

WWE Match of the Year: 4-Way WWE Tag Title Ladder Match from Armageddon 2006.
- Every year there's this one match from WWE that stands up above the rest, and this year it had to come on the very last PPV of the year and it was a special bonus match at that. Imagine the numbers it could have helped draw if they had actually advertised it? Despite the horrible injury suffered by Joey Mercury half-way through the match, the remaining men in the match still had their time to shine. London & Kendrick got a major rub from winning this one, and hopefully, WWE finally takes notice of their talents and not just as two small guys that can bump their asses off for the musclehead heavyweights.

TNA Match of the Year: Six Sides of Steel NWA Tag Title Match from Bound For Glory 2006
- The Latin American Exchange and the team of AJ Styles & Christopher Daniels work really well together and every match they had against each other was very entertaining, but this was hands down the best match in the series they had against each other. All four men gave it all they had and then some (Hernandez's insane dive off the cage!). I didn't even mind the small role Konnan had in helping his team in winning this one.

Singles Match of the Year: Samoa Joe VS Scott Steiner - TNA Slammiversary 2006
I've seen a lot of good singles matches where titles were on the line and what not, but this one just really stands out for me. You can sing the praises of Joe/Angle all you want, but I thought those were boring since all they try to do is make each other tap. And a lot of the big singles matches in WWE revolved around John Cena, but those were mostly by the numbers booked matches. In this match on the other hand, you had the young rising star looking to punk out the established big name in Steiner, and the two went at it tooth and nail like Godzilla VS King Kong.

Performance of a Lifetime: The Big Show
Everyone groaned when Big Show won the ECW world title, but a new found respect was gained by the big man not long after as he defended the title against all comers for weeks and tooks the bumps and bruises necessary to truly be accepted as "hardcore". Did anyone seriously ever thought we'd see the day that Big Show and Ric Flair would be involved in a brutal title match on ECW TV that involved bumps in THUMBTACKS? Or all the other times Show bumped himself off despite all the injuries he was piling up that eventually lead to his "retirement"? I have ZERO respect for Bobby Lashley as ECW champion until he does something even remotely as extreme as what Show had done instead of being just being another jacked up body.

He Needs to Retire Already: Ric Flair
Ric Flair needs to retire already. He's 59 this year! Sure he can still go in the ring when needed, but is he really needed to? He should be kept on the sidelines and not active in ring duty so that his actual matches mean something more than just jobbing out every other week. Heck, doesn't RAW need a new GM?

One final note I'd like to add, the whole year I've heard the praises sang to TNA and how they are pro-wrestling and the alternate product to WWE. WWE might come up with some of the dumbest, most intellectually insulting storylines for their wrestlers, but that's where they usually leave it, at the storylines. TNA on the other hand seem to enjoy trying to top itself with the some of the worst booked match finishes they can think up on PPV. When they hit the ring, they need to leave the story there and let the guys work their magic. Quit with the overbooked finishes and just let it be the pro-wrestling alternative they keep claiming to be.
